ST. HILDA'S HOUSE

St. Hilda's House is a residential young adult discernment program devoted to spiritual formation and urban ministry while living in community. It is based at Christ Church in partnership with Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University and is supported, in part, by a generous grant from Trinity Church Wall Street's Trinity Grants Program as part of the Episcopal Service Corps. St. Hilda's House interns deepen their understanding of themselves, their work, their faith, and their ministry by participating in mutual support, communal formation, and intentional worship and prayer. Eight interns live together in a communal domicile in the parish's former rectory, together with their designated chaplain, the Revd Greta Getlein.

The interns assist in the regular Sunday liturgies at Christ Church, with the opportunity to take part in our many weekday liturgies as well. Interns serve throughout the greater New Haven area in various urban ministries like the Community Soup Kitchen, local food banks, shelters, clothing collection and distribution.  Other opportunities include hospice work, low- income housing renovation, & the Chapel on the Green.

St. Hilda's House was formally inaugurated on October 13, 2010 by The Most Revd Katherine Jefferts-Schori, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, at a Solemn Pontifical Mass celebrated by the Rt Revd Ian Douglas, Diocesan Bishop of Connecticut.

For more information, see the St. Hilda's House website, or contact the Program Director, Robert Hendrickson.

CURRENT ST. HILDA'S HOUSE INTERNS

Kristin Saylor: Kristin was born and raised in Whitefish Bay, WI. After graduating from UW-Madison in 2009  with a degree in Religious Studies, she migrated to Manhattan, serving with the New York Intern Program. She  spent her time in Port Newark, working for a non-profit that serves merchant seafarers – visiting commercial  shipping vessels, ministering to mariners from all over the world, and eating a lot of awesome ethnic food.  Kristin will be serving as an assistant to the principal of Saint Martin DePorres Academy while with Saint Hilda's.

Steven King:  Steven grew up in Lawrence, Kansas and graduated from the University of Kansas in December of  2009.  At KU,  he studied psychology and became very involved with the Canterbury organization for Episcopal students, serving as a Peer Minister there and on the Higher Education Committee for the diocese.  He also served as an intern for the Youth Program of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas, assisting with youth events for students. After graduation, he worked full-time at Central Junior High School in Lawrence where he worked with students who were developmentally delayed.  With Saint Hilda's, he will work as an intern at Christian Community Action.

Jordan Trumble:  Jordan was raised in West Virginia and moved to Ohio, attending Capital University.  In college, her course work in liberation theology as well as experiences working at summer camp sparked interest in social justice and community-building.  She spent her first year out of college with the Episcopal Urban Intern Program, through which she worked with under-served populations affected by systemic injustices in and around Los Angeles.  She will be interning with Your Place, an anti-violence ministry of Saint Andrew's New Haven while at Saint Hilda's.

Caleb Bennetch:  Caleb was born in Northern Virginia, and graduated from James Madison University this past December with a degree in Music Education. He has played violin since the age of five, and performed in many choirs and orchestras. He loves to do anything outdoors, especially mountain biking, road biking, and hiking.  Caleb will be singing with the Christ Church Choir as well as the Schola Cantorum of Yale this year in addition to serving with the Community Soup Kitchen based at Christ Church.

Paul Tunnell:  Paul Tunnell is from North Carolina and became very involved at St. John's Episcopal Church in Charlotte while  attending the University of North Carolina. After college he moved to Costa Rica and was the Missions Coordinator and Diocesan Liaison for the Bishop of the Diocese there. While in Costa Rica he began the discernment process in North Carolina and was placed at St. Martin's Episcopal in Charlotte, NC.  He just finished a 500 mile pilgrimage from Southern France to Santiago, Spain.  While with Saint Hilda's, he will serve as an  activities and volunteer coordinator for Saint Martin DePorres Academy.

Peter Johnston:   Peter Johnston is a 2009 graduate of Yale College, where he was Chairman of his debating  society, President of the pro-life club, and a columnist for the student newspaper.  He first found Christ Church through its Compline service, and subsequently pursued confirmation in the Episcopal Church.  An Eagle Scout, he looks forward to exploring the state and national parks of New England on Saturdays.  He will spend his time working in the Christ Church office and as an intern at Chapel on the Green while with Saint Hilda's.

Jeremy Vogt:   Jeremy Vogt was raised in Minnesota and moved to upstate NY where he served at Christ Church  in Warwick, NY regularly until he attended Binghamton University.  While there, he split his time between Good Shepherd Anglican Church and Union Center Church, a nondenominational parish.  He is working to begin the discernment process this year.  While with Saint Hilda's, Jeremy will serve as an intern with Your Place at Saint Andrew's.

 Magnificat: The Song of Mary

My soul doth magnify the Lord,
   and my spirit hath rejoiced
         in God my Savior.
For he hath regarded
   the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold from henceforth
all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me,
   and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him
   throughout all generations.
He hath showed strength with his arm;
   he hath scattered the proud
in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat,
and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen
        his servant Israel,
as he promised to our forefathers,
Abraham and his seed for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
    and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever.  Amen.

(Luke 1:46-55)
